Blog posting: How often should you publish?

Posting to your blog and creating content is just a small part of the work that goes into keeping your blog pages filled with articles.

Managing a blog can be rewarding and a lot of fun, most people find out quickly that it can take a lot of work.

There is SEO to be done, images to be uploaded, alt text to be added, categories and tags to be defined.

As if all that wasn’t enough the need for more content is ever-present.

Most bloggers, keep notes on their laptop or mobile phone or have a running spreadsheet that they continually update with headings or ideas.

This helps bloggers to formulate thoughts, not lose any great post topics and keeps them on track.

So how often should you be posting to your blog?

Blog posting frequency

How much you are posting content to your blog will depend on the nature of your business.

If you are operating a blog that is a review site then you will need to blog frequently as new products come out.

Blog posting may be required less often if you are running a blog that deals with serious lifestyle topics.

In this case, you may only need to add a new blog posting once a month.

The key here is to think about what will resonate and appeal to your audience.

Blog posts should be as engaging as possible so think about your post length before you publish.

Consider the type and length or article that will appeal more to your site visitors.

Do your readers want short form, punchy, content, or are they expecting a well thought out, long-form article?

There is little point churning out post after post hoping that it gains traffic if it is not what your readers want.

Determine the ‘why’

why are you posting blogs?

Keeping to a regular posting schedule is preferable, but to be successful you will need to identify the ‘why’ of your blog posting.

What are you trying to accomplish from your posts.

Are you using your blog posts to link into sales of affiliate products or simply for SEO purposes to gain more traffic to your website?

It could be that you are simply wanting to build a highly enagaged audience as part of a community.

Knowing what your blog posting goals are will help you to set a realistic schedule.

Quality and quantity

quality of blog posting

Low-quality blog posts should be avoided, they will not serve the intended purpose and will not reflect on you well.

It is much better to focus on providing one good quality well-written article that adds value than churning out 5 or 6 pieces of garbage.

To make your blog postings as high quality as possible there are plenty of free tools available online to help you.

Check out –

  • Grammarly for grammar and punctuation
  • Hemmingway for sentence structure and readability
  • Sharethrough Headline Analyzer for great titles
  • Unsplash for high-quality free images

Using tools like these will catch errors and help you present the highest quality article possible to your readers.

Keep your blog posting on a schedule

People are creatures of habit and that means that your audience will expect blog posts to arrive in some sort of pattern.

If you have been publishing a post every week then your readers will come to expect to receive a new post around the same time.

Set up a posting schedule or a calendar that you can commit to.

Be realistic and don’t try and produce more posts than you can comfortably manage. Find out what works for you and stick to it.

Research keywords BEFORE writing

keyword research for blogs

Every new blogger has fallen into the trap of spending hours writing a killers post only to find that it gets ZERO traffic.

It’s disappointing and frustrating.

One of the reasons that your blog post falls into the abyss is the focus keywords you are targeting,

These should reflect the topic of the blog but moreover, they should be terms that are actually being searched for.

Use tools like Google Keyword Planner, Ask the Public, and Ubersuggest to research different keywords and their search volumes.

Ubersuggest is one of my favorite tools to use.

It is Neil Patel’s SEO tool and many functions are free. Enter your keywords and Ubersuggest will display search volumes, competitiveness, and other sites that are ranking for the term.

Pretty useful.

Share your blogs after posting for more exposure

share blog posts

When you have published your new blog to your site think about sharing it with social media to widen your audience.

The number of people that follow your social media accounts will be a mix of your readers and non-readers.

Sharing your blog can help you to widen your scope

Social media audiences also share some similarities with your blog audience.

They will expect to see new blog posts with a certain frequency.

Use hashtags and share or retweet your posts multiple times to gain more followers.

Final thoughts on blog posting frequencies

Determining what your overriding goal is will help you to set a suitable schedule for your posting your blogs.

Are you writing purely for SEO purposes and to build traffic, or are you seeking to build a highly engaged audience?

Identifying the ‘why’ and the ‘when’ you should post will allow you to stay on track.

Whatever your goal your blogs should always be of top quality and posted on the schedule you decide.
